Lychees is a tropical fruit tree in the same botanical family as litchi (or lychee) and is native to Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia. The fruit of lychees grows in large clusters and gets its name from the Malay word 'rambut' which means 'hairy', referring to the layer of soft reddish spines that cover the soft white flesh beneath the rind. Once peeled, the rambutan, with its whitish flesh, the oblong size of a golf ball, and its inedible central brown pip, is to the untrained eye quite indistinguishable from lychi! The somewhat translucent flesh of lychees is deliciously sweet, juicy, and simply packed with vitamin C. These tropical fruits are most commonly eaten fresh, after having been peeled of their brightly colored furry coverings and pitted. The best quality and tastiest fruits are sold in the markets still attached in clusters to the productive branch of their parent tree.
